Cherokee County Real Estate

Named after the Cherokee people who used to live in the area that the county now occupies, this suburban region is known to be the place where “the metro meets the mountains.” The majority of the county’s water area is that of Lake Allatoona in the southwest. Cherokee has a land area of 424 square miles and a water area of 13 square miles. The county is conveniently located near the city of Atlanta and the interstate highway corridor.

In the heart of the county, right by the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, you’ll find Canton, its designated county seat. Here, you’ll find a vibrant metropolitan area with numerous shopping and business districts. Canton used to be called Etowah, named after the Etowah River that traverses the town. Later on, it was changed into Canton, as the city had silk production as one of its industries in its early days.

The county has experienced a significant growth in its population over the years. In 2013, according to data from the United States Census, the county had a recorded population of 225,106 residents – a significant increase from its recorded population of just 141,903 residents in 2000. The surge in population was attributed to the rise of residential and master-planned communities that were developed in Cherokee, especially in Canton.

Cherokee has a high performing school district, the Cherokee County School District, managing 44 public schools under its jurisdiction.
